All my hair just grew back from my first chop and I'm getting ready to make the cut again. I realized i like me with shorter hair better. If you are going for modern a bob is more modern than shoulder length. Depending on your face type i see that shoulder length seems to take away from some people's faces. If you are nervous take off a little at a time start with an inch or 2 and work your way up to a length you like. Make sure you have a consultation with the stylist prior to making your decision she'll be able to tell you te proportions of the style you pick for your face and what the benefits and consequences of it may be. I have an oval face but I am also tall and petite so i wouldn't wear a style that was super long and straight it would over power me and make me look like a green bean. I also suggest asymmetrical bobs where it's a little lower than ear length on one side of the head and as it works around the back it might be an inch below ear length on the opposite side. It's a style from the 20's that is came back.

It all depends on your face shape. Not everyone can sport the same haircut and look cute. If you have an oval face then you could do either and look hot.
